A sculptural duo by Jan van der Vaart (1931–2000), one of the leading ceramic artists of the 20th century and a pivotal figure in European modernist design. Van der Vaart’s oeuvre is defined by architectonic clarity, strict geometries, and a conceptual discipline rooted in seriality and proportion. After joining the faculty of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 1968, he shaped an entire generation of ceramic thinking—transforming functional vessels into modular, mathematically precise constructions.
His collaborations with Rosenthal in the 1980s and 1990s remain among the most coveted examples of his industrial work, translating his studio logic into porcelain of exceptional refinement.
This rare “Windmill” duo demonstrates van der Vaart’s unmistakable vocabulary: circular bodies intersected by sharply delineated planes, producing objects that oscillate between utility and sculpture. The turquoise glaze—soft, luminous, and subtly speckled—is characteristic of Rosenthal’s high-level technical experimentation of the period.
