Cuno Fischer & Bjørn Wiinblad for Rosenthal Studio-Line
“Bulls” & “Roosters” Vases — Germany, 1992
This striking duo of porcelain vases represents a genuine artistic collaboration between Cuno Fischer and Bjørn Wiinblad, produced by Rosenthal Studio-Line in the early 1990s. Both pieces belong to a series in which Fischer’s sculptural vessel forms become the architectural stage for Wiinblad’s unmistakable graphic universe.
Far from being mere surface decoration, these works are the result of a carefully balanced dialogue between form, image, and material—one of Rosenthal’s core ambitions during the late 20th century.

About the Designers
Cuno Fischer (Germany) was a central figure in Rosenthal’s postwar design language, particularly known for his clear, cylindrical vessel forms that offered a neutral yet elegant canvas for artistic collaboration. His work embodies the German modernist belief in proportion, balance, and functional clarity—never intrusive, always structurally precise.
Bjørn Wiinblad (Denmark, 1918–2006) stands as one of the most recognizable artistic voices of Scandinavian applied arts. His graphic style—ornamental, narrative, and joyfully theatrical—draws from folklore, mythology, and a highly personal form of decorative modernism. Wiinblad’s figures are never merely illustrative; they are symbolic, rhythmic, and emotionally charged.
In these vases, Wiinblad’s bulls and roosters appear as stylized archetypes rather than naturalistic animals—constructed from spirals, geometric fields, and layered color zones that recall both Art Nouveau linework and post-1960s graphic experimentation.
Artistic and Design Context
Produced in 1992, these works belong to a period when Rosenthal Studio-Line consciously blurred the boundaries between industrial design, graphic art, and collectible sculpture. Collaborations with artists like Wiinblad allowed the company to position porcelain not only as functional ware, but as a medium for narrative and artistic expression.
The animal motifs resonate with long traditions in European decorative arts, yet their execution is unmistakably late-modern: playful, self-aware, and deliberately non-hierarchical. These are objects that comfortably inhabit both a curated interior and a design collection.
Condition
Both vases are in excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks, or restorations. Glazes are clean and luminous. Each piece bears the Rosenthal Studio-Line Germany mark to the base, consistent with early 1990s production.
