Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) was one of Denmark’s most recognizable decorative artists, known for his imaginative graphic language and ornamental forms that bridged Scandinavian modernism with a more lyrical, storytelling aesthetic. His long collaboration with Rosenthal in Germany produced numerous ceramics, porcelain, and glass designs that brought artistic illustration and expressive decoration into modern European interiors.
Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, became one of the most influential European manufacturers of porcelain and glass in the twentieth century. Through collaborations with international designers and artists, the company developed a reputation for combining high craftsmanship with contemporary design.
Design Observations
The Lotus decoration is based on a repeating stylized lotus-petal motif, etched in satin finish against clear glass.
