The Underwood 16 is a true unicorn of typewriter history—a model that even typewriter historian Robert Messenger considers a rare commercial rarity. While other machines of its era were mass-produced, this model remained an exception, rarely appearing even in specialist forums. This restored machine offers the opportunity to own a piece that almost never surfaces on the market.

Restoration:
All typewriters restored by farbenundklang were thoroughly tested, serviced, and fine-tuned as a first step. Missing or defective parts were replaced with suitable donor parts. The mechanism, case, and carrying case were cleaned, refurbished, and restored. Modern materials and technologies, such as nanotechnology, SiO2, and UV technology, were used in the restoration process. Only silicone oil-, wax-, and carcinogen-free products were used.
Aesthetic condition:
After thorough cleaning, care, and SiO2 treatment, the robust ABS plastic casing has regained its like-new appearance. The metal and chrome-plated surfaces have reclaimed their original shine. The casing has a cool "Nordic Blue" color (a mix of RAL 5024 and RAL 7000) and a matte, textured, and very durable surface. Very fine signs of use are still visible on the casing—they tell the story of this typewriter. The carrying case and handle are intact; only in two small areas has the adhesive on the seams come loose, which does not affect functionality and is barely noticeable. It is clean and has been refreshed with a silicone-free plastic care product.
Technical condition:
Thanks to thorough cleaning, maintenance, and fine-tuning, all mechanisms function perfectly. The platen and all rubber parts have also undergone special cleaning and maintenance, which can extend the typewriter's lifespan by several more decades. The typeface is crisp and clean, and the keys are perfectly aligned. The font is Pica (10 cpi) – the classic, traditional typewriter typeface.
