This Reconstruction Wardrobe, model S154, designed by René Gabriel for the Temporary Construction Service, has become a classic of 1950s design.
It has been fully restored, cleaned, the interior sanded, the shelves are new and immaculate, all finished with a wax coating that highlights its lovely patina.
It has a hanging rail on one side and shelves on the other (a second hanging rail is present; simply remove the shelves to create a single large hanging space, and conversely, it's easy to add shelves to the right-hand side).
The wardrobe, often called the "disaster relief" wardrobe, is an iconic piece of furniture from the post-World War II reconstruction program. Designed by French designer René Gabriel at the request of the Ministry of Reconstruction, this piece was part of the "emergency furniture" intended to refurnish destroyed homes at a symbolic price paid for with ration coupons. Made of solid oak, it features two doors, one opening to a wardrobe and the other to shelves, each with a lock and keys.
Its sturdy, demountable design facilitated transport and assembly, a major advantage in the post-war context.
