This painting is a historical depiction of Honora "Nano" Nagle (1718–1784), a well-known Irish Catholic pioneer who secretly founded schools for poor children in the 18th century under the British 'Penal Laws'. She is also the founder of the Presentation Sisters religious order. The original 19th-century oil painting titled Nano Nagle and Pupils (attributed to artist John O'Keeffe) hangs in the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, Ireland. It depicts Nano Nagle with her pupils. In the background, the medieval bell tower of Red Abbey in Cork can be seen through the window. Due to the original composition and details, this copy is identical to the museum piece.

The back of the painting confirms that this is a hand-painted oil painting and not a print. It is an artisan-made copy of the original from the Crawford Art Gallery. Based on the construction, the following details stand out: Technical characteristics The support: The work is painted on linen or cotton canvas. The brown discoloration and stains on the back (bleed-through of the primer or oil) are typical of an authentic painter's canvas. The stretcher frame: The canvas is stretched on a wooden stretcher frame with wooden wedges in the corners to keep the canvas taut. The construction and the type of nails indicate a 20th-century production.
Historical context: Around 1950-1960, high-quality oil copies were frequently commissioned from professional copyists on the occasion of jubilees of the Presentation Sisters (the Order of Nano Nagle) or for the furnishing of Catholic schools and convents.
The painting has been in family ownership for over 60 years.
