Product description
Vibrations Bisque Porcelain Vase – Dieter Mankau for Rosenthal Studio-Linie, Model 3554, Germany, Design 1972 / Production 2007 A striking example of German post-war design, this Rosenthal Studio-Linie vase was created by Dieter Mankau as part of his celebrated Vibrations series, first introduced in 1972. Executed in matte white bisque porcelain, this version is considerably less common than the glossy glazed examples more frequently encountered on the market. The cylindrical form is animated by a rhythmic relief of pyramidal protrusions that wrap around the body in a precise geometric grid. The resulting interplay of light and shadow transforms throughout the day, creating a subtle optical vibration that gave the series its name. The unglazed bisque finish further emphasizes the sculptural qualities of the design, highlighting every contour while lending the piece a refined architectural presence. Designed during a period when Rosenthal Studio-Linie collaborated with some of the most innovative designers of the era, the Vibrations series reflects the experimental spirit of 1970s German design. Rather than relying on decoration, Mankau employed repetition, structure, and surface modulation to create visual movement from pure form alone. Dieter Mankau (born 1941) studied industrial design at the Werkkunstschule Kassel and later pursued experimental environmental design at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Through his collaboration with Rosenthal Studio-Linie, he developed a number of highly distinctive porcelain objects that remain sought after by collectors of modern German design. Beyond his work for Rosenthal, Mankau became an influential educator and professor of product design in Offenbach. This particular vase bears the Rosenthal Studio-Linie mark and model number 3554. While the design dates to 1972, the production mark indicates a later authorized Rosenthal production from 2007, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the model over several decades.
