Designed by André Cazenave in the 1960s, the iconic ‘Dora’ rock lamps epitomize his vision of merging sculpture with function. Produced by several French manufacturers—including Roland Jamois, Atelier A, Singleton, Disderot, and Tecta—these lamps remain among the most recognizable examples of mid-century French lighting design.
This exceptional set of five lamps was manufactured by Singleton, noted for its distinctively textured finish and subtle variations in tone and shape. Each piece is handcrafted from epoxy and fiberglass, then coated with a delicate layer of mineral powder, giving it its signature stone-like appearance. No two are alike: each lamp possesses an organic form, reflecting Cazenave’s intention to bring elements of nature into the home while blurring the boundary between art and light.
When illuminated, the ‘Dora’ lamps reveal their sculptural essence: a soft, ambient glow reminiscent of moonlight, adding a tranquil and atmospheric touch to any interior. They function simultaneously as lighting and art, a hallmark of Cazenave’s visionary design.
This set is in very good original condition, showing only minimal wear consistent with age. Four lamps retain their original Singleton label on the underside; the fifth, unmarked with a metal base, is nonetheless unmistakably a Singleton moon rock lamp, recognizable by its form and construction. Complete sets in multiple sizes are extremely rare, and Singleton variants are particularly sought after by collectors.
An iconic example of 1960s French design, the ‘Dora’ lamps stand at the crossroads of art, design, and sculpture.
Studio Haag also offers a separate set of five ‘Dora’ moon rock lamps by André Cazenave for Atelier A, France, 1960s.
