Artist & Manufacturer
Hans Theo Baumann (1924–2016) was one of the leading German industrial designers of the postwar era. Educated in architecture and design, he became professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe and developed influential work across product design, ceramics, lighting, and architecture. Baumann collaborated with numerous manufacturers including Rosenthal, Braun, and WMF, and his designs are represented in major museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Vitra Design Museum.
Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, became internationally known for combining high-quality porcelain production with avant-garde design collaborations. Through its design programs in the 1950s and 1960s, Rosenthal worked with leading architects, artists, and industrial designers to redefine porcelain as a modern design medium.
Design Observations
The decoration consists of precisely arranged horizontal bands composed of fine linear patterns, grids, circles, and optical motifs. These graphic elements create a visual rhythm that wraps around the cylindrical forms, producing an effect reminiscent of Op Art and early graphic modernism.
The contrast between the crisp black patterns and the matte white porcelain surface emphasizes the architectural clarity of the forms while transforming the vases into vertical graphic objects.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition.
No visible chips, cracks, or restorations.
Decoration well preserved.
What for
An elegant pair for collectors of Rosenthal design or mid-century modern interiors. The tall vase works beautifully with long stems or branches on a console or floor placement, while the smaller vase is ideal for a table or shelf arrangement; together they function as sculptural graphic accents in modern, minimalist, or Bauhaus-inspired interiors.
Remarks
Two complementary Rosenthal vases designed by Hans Theo Baumann in 1963.
