Product description
A rare and highly distinctive Mid-Century Modern rattan rocking chair from former Czechoslovakia, dating from the 1960s and attributed to architect and designer Alan Fuchs for ÚLUV (Ústředí Lidové Umělecké Výroby). The chair combines a sculptural hand-woven natural rattan seat and backrest with a lightweight black-painted tubular metal frame, curved rocking runners and organically shaped solid wooden armrests. Its unusually light and open construction gives the chair a particularly elegant and sculptural appearance. The attribution to Alan Fuchs for ÚLUV is based on the chair’s distinctive design, construction and materials, together with documented examples of Fuchs’s rattan furniture for ÚLUV from the same period. The combination of hand-woven rattan, a lightweight tubular metal frame and organic sculptural forms is characteristic of Czechoslovak furniture developed around 1960 and associated with the ÚLUV design tradition. Please note that this particular chair does not bear an original manufacturer’s or designer’s mark. The attribution is therefore intentionally stated as “attributed to Alan Fuchs for ÚLUV”, rather than as a definitively confirmed or signed example. The chair is a particularly interesting example of Czechoslovak Mid-Century Modernism and the development of modern rattan furniture in the early 1960s, within the broader design context influenced by the Brussels Style. Details • Type: Mid-Century rocking chair • Period: Circa 1960s • Origin: Former Czechoslovakia • Attributed to: Alan Fuchs for ÚLUV • Materials: Natural rattan, black-painted metal, solid wood • Construction: Hand-woven rattan on a lightweight tubular metal frame • Style: Mid-Century Modern / Czechoslovak Modernism / Brussels Style influence Condition Very good vintage condition. The chair is fully functional, structurally stable and ready for use. The rocking mechanism works smoothly. The natural rattan is generally firm and very well preserved, retaining a beautiful authentic patina. For complete transparency, one small rattan binding on the backrest had a minor superficial break. It has been carefully secured and discreetly repaired. The repair does not affect the chair’s stability, comfort or functionality. The solid wooden armrests retain their warm original character, with only minor age-related micro-scratches and patina. The original black-painted metal frame shows authentic signs of age and use, including minor paint wear and surface patina, particularly on the runners and selected areas of the frame. Overall, this is a rare and characterful piece of Czechoslovak Mid-Century design, particularly appealing to collectors of ÚLUV, Alan Fuchs and Eastern European design. A distinctive and unusually light sculptural rocking chair with strong visual presence and authentic vintage character.
