Offered for sale: a very rare and impressive vintage Korean brass altar candlestick.
This traditional ritual object was historically used on altars for Buddhist ceremonies or ancestor worship (Isa).
A beautiful piece of Asian history, ideal for collectors or as a unique eye-catcher in an eclectic or Hollywood Regency interior.
Design, Symbolism & Unique Details:
• Base: Two graceful cranes (Korean symbol for peace, wisdom, and longevity).
Top: Two leaping fish/carp (symbol of success and spiritual transformation).
Rare detail: The heads of the figures are inlaid with the original, deep blue glass eyes.
All 4 eyes are still completely intact! With this type of old altarpiece, these inlaid elements have almost always been lost, making this piece extra valuable.
Condition and construction:
The object was crafted using traditional Korean sand casting and manual soldering, visible on the robust, authentic base. The brass has a beautiful, weathered patina with some natural copper tarnish (verdigris).
• Dimensions: 40 cm (height) x 11 cm (width) x 8.5 cm (base depth).
Note: The candlestick currently shows a slight tilt. Because the brass is flexible and the parts are secured with nuts at the bottom, this can be very easily restored to a light and straight position as desired.
Material: Solid cast brass / glass
