Rare L. van der Vlugt tubular frame armchair, model VI-A-138 for Gispen, 1931
A rare and historically interesting Dutch modernist armchair, designed by L.C. “Leen” van der Vlugt in 1931 and produced by Gispen. This model is documented as VI-A-138 within the so-called Gispen outside assortment.
The armchair features a distinct architectural design language strongly connected to the New Building movement and the early Dutch modernist movement. The design consists of a continuous chrome tubular frame with elegantly rounded armrests, black armrests, and a floating-looking seat and backrest. The rear is particularly striking due to the visible metal tension springs, which lend the design both comfort and a distinct technical, functional character.
L.C. van der Vlugt is best known as one of the most important Dutch modernist architects and as the architect of the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. His collaboration with W.H. Gispen played a significant role in the development of Dutch modernist interiors of the 1930s, including projects such as Huis Sonneveld and other iconic examples of functional design.
The armchair features deep red woven upholstery, combined with a chrome tubular frame with visible patina. The natural aging of the metal gives the object a powerful, authentic, and architectural appearance.
A special collector's item for enthusiasts of Dutch modernism, Bauhaus, the New Building movement, early tubular frame furniture, and 1930s design.
