L. van der Vlught for Gispen – Tubular Steel Lounge Chair / Armchair, Model VI-A-138, 1931
Rare Dutch modernist armchair, designed by L. van der Vlught in 1931 and produced by Gispen as model VI-A-138. A particularly strong example of early Dutch functionalism, related to the design language of the New Building and the Bauhaus period.
The armchair features an architectural chrome tubular frame with elegant, continuous armrest shapes. The generous seat and back appear to almost float within the frame, giving the chair a light yet powerful appearance. The deep brick-red upholstery forms a beautiful contrast with the patinated metal and the black armrests, presumably Bakelite or lacquered wood.
A striking detail is the back construction with visible metal springs at the rear — a technical and visual feature that beautifully showcases the early modernist construction. Due to its sculptural lines and historical design value, this is a true statement piece for a minimalist interior, a design collection, or a setting featuring early tubular steel designs from the 1930s.
