Antique technical railway lantern made of black lacquered iron, with a prismatic body and patinated bronze top finial. The side glass panes, colored in shades of red and green, acted as light signaling filters, essential for railway traffic communication and safety. The lantern retains its original structure, with a hinged side door and a top handle for carrying or hanging.
Inside, there is a compartment for the oil burner, which illuminated the lantern through a perforated upper ventilation system, typical of French manufacturers of the early 20th century.
The piece bears an engraved plaque with the inscription "H. Luchaire", a manufacturer of technical instruments and lighting, founded in 1720 in Paris. The company, with a long family tradition, moved in 1913 to the Rue de la Chapelle in Saint-Ouen, where it continued to produce precision maritime and railway lanterns.
An object of engineering and industrial design that combines utility and beauty, a testament to French interwar technical refinement and the functional elegance of honest materials.
