Pierre Chapo: A Visionary Designer (1927–1987)
Born into a family of craftsmen, Pierre Chapo studied architecture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His passion for exploration led him to travel through England, Scandinavia, and the Americas, where he was captivated by architectural diversity.
In 1957, Chapo and his wife Nicole founded Société Chapo, a workshop and gallery showcasing his designs alongside Nicole’s ceramics and textiles. Their renowned gallery at 14 Boulevard de l’Hôpital opened in 1958, where among other artists mainly his and Isamu Noguchi’s creations were on display.
Chapo’s designs, rooted in traditional craftsmanship, drew inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Bauhaus principles. Guided by the golden ratio, he emphasized material, form, and function, with elmwood as his preferred medium. Despite falling ill later in life, Chapo continued creating until his passing in 1987, leaving a timeless legacy in design.
