Original lithograph, in fine old-gold frame; Dimensions: 44 x 34 cm (frame), 32 x 25 cm (sheet), 22 x 16 cm (visible portion of sheet).
This lithograph belongs to the series "Le goût du bonheur," which Picasso had published by the German publisher Carl Schunemann in 1970 at the insistence of some friends. His friends had shown him the extraordinary quality of Schunemann's printer - the Munich studio Dietz Offizin - in the production of lithographs. Picasso was so taken with it that he immediately grouped together a number of unpublished drawings (68 in all) to have them lithographically printed by Dietz Offizin.
Three partners united to make the publication possible: Cercle d'Art (Paris), Harry N. Abrams (New York), and Carl Schunemann (Bremen). Each of these publishers accounted for 666 copies, so that a total of 1998 copies were printed. The sheet framed here comes from Carl Schunemann's reserve.
Picasso himself followed the printing process very closely and corrected the printing where necessary, so that the sheets acquired maximum authenticity. The title of the series ("Le goût du bonheur") was also given to the series at Picasso's suggestion.
