He started out as a graphic artist and then made etchings with a lot of relief in them. Gentenaar has been experimenting for years with the design of paper that again and again reveals some of its secrets to him.
Peter Gentenaar started making paper in 1973. He wanted to make his own paper to print his etchings on. He learned the whole process of making pulp from plant fiber and turning this pulp into a sheet of paper. Making paper means working with water and plant fibres. The fiber is ground for hours with water in a machine called the Hollander. A grinding instrument invented by the millers from the Zaan region around 1650. In 1991, Gentenaar built his own Dutchman to grind the flax and hemp fiber he needs for his work. He fell in love with fibers and never made an etching again.
The work was purchased (around 2003/2004) from the artothek in Papendrecht.
