Per Kirkeby (Copenhagen, September 1, 1938 – Copenhagen, May 9, 2018) was a Danish painter, sculptor, and architect known for his geometric architectural sculptures made of brick. Originally, he was a geologist. His paintings of untamable, treacherous nature consist of various softly modulated layers and fields of color in which the influence of his geological studies is palpable. Not the abstracted subject, but the art of painting takes center stage. Kirkeby lived and worked in Copenhagen, on the island of Læsø, in Frankfurt am Main, and in Arnasco, Italy. Themes of his works are the landscape and the earth as a primal force, which he sought to express in paintings of geological layers, caves, fossils, glaciers, and rock formations, always painted on the boundary between the abstract and the figurative.
