■ A MAJOR AESTHETIC BREAKTHROUGH
Les Merciers is privileged to present a masterpiece of postmodern furniture: the Penelope chair. Designed in 1982 by the eminent American designer Charles Pollock for the prestigious Italian manufacturer Castelli, this chair marks a radical turning point in the history of design. Nearly twenty years after the resounding success of his imposing executive chairs, Pollock here opted for absolute minimalism, offering a work of astonishing visual lightness.
■ AN ENGINEERING FEAT
The innovation of the Penelope chair lies in the exceptional mastery of its materials. Its architecture is based on a continuous sled base made of solid chromed steel wire. This structure gives the chair an airy silhouette and a subtle rocking effect.
But the true revolution lies in its seat. Pollock replaces traditional padding with an ingenious, breathable mesh: a fine steel wire fence meticulously coated with black synthetic resin. This bold technical choice offers complete visual transparency while guaranteeing adaptive ergonomic support and unparalleled thermal comfort, even during extended use.
■ CONDITION AND PROVENANCE
This collector's item is in excellent original condition. The chrome-plated steel has retained its shine and structural integrity. The synthetic mesh, the central element of the piece, maintains all its tension and flexibility, without any major flaws.
