Product description
Pauline Wiertz (1955-2019) - very special unique piece (ceramic object). Chicken with maritime scene on the breast. Special unique piece (ceramic object) by Pauline Wiertz. Pauline Wiertz was a Dutch visual artist who was active as a sculptor, ceramist, and jewelry designer. In perfect condition. Can be hung on the wall or displayed lying down. Dimensions 21 x 13 x 11 cm (h x w x d) Weight 353 grams Marked Unmarked (signed all over) NB: last photo with Queen Maxima, in reference to Wiertz's work Biography: Wiertz trained as a ceramist at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (Netherlands) (1972-1977). She also studied at the Academie Minerva in Groningen (Netherlands). From 1977 onwards, she had her own studio. In addition to ceramics and monumental work, Wiertz also produced jewelry starting in 2000. Her work is not preceded by designs or sketches. In contrast to the modernist tradition in which Wiertz was trained, she had a strong inclination towards decoration reminiscent of the Baroque and Rococo periods. Shellfish, chicken bones, chicken feet, pickles, fish, shrimp, and peanuts: Wiertz cast objects from her daily environment in porcelain and made jewelry and objects from them. She crafted jewelry from porcelain, sometimes in combination with felt or other materials. In doing so, she applied transfer techniques to the porcelain to decorate the objects. Outside of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and Limoges (France), Wiertz has worked at the European Ceramic Work Centre in Den Bosch (the Netherlands), as well as in China, Japan, and Curaçao. Wiertz also taught and gave guest lectures at various educational institutions, such as the Academie Minerva in Groningen (Netherlands) (1988-1989), the Design Academy Eindhoven (Netherlands) (2002), the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam (Netherlands) (2003), and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (Netherlands) (2000). Two pieces of jewelry by Wiertz, along with hundreds of other pieces by various Dutch designers, ended up in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in Amsterdam (Netherlands) in 2009 through a donation by Marjan Unger and Gerard Unger. Wiertz's jewelry has been and continues to be presented by, among others, Galerie Hélène Porée, Galerie Louise Smit, and Inez Stodel.
