'your tail is a lure -
and i am your bait -
be sure not to wiggle -
too soon or too late
Synthesis of Image and Word
This work is more than a painting; it is a psychological game captured in color and rhyme. While the image initially appears cheerful and (eye)-blinding due to the use of primary colors and Cobra-like shapes, the accompanying text gives the composition a sharp and almost dangerous edge.
The Inverted Hierarchy: In the text, the narrator positions himself as the 'bait', but he is the one giving the instructions. He dictates the rules of the game to the hunter with the 'tail'. This translates visually to the green, curling offshoot on the left side, which, through the text, transforms from an abstract form into an instrument of deception.
The Tension of Timing: The warning “not to wiggle too soon or too late” creates enormous tension in the static image. The enormous, central eye with the spiral pupil acts as the metronome of this action: an all-seeing focal point waiting for the perfect moment.
Visual Style: The canvas is executed in Megens' characteristic style: thick, black contours that force the bright color planes into a tight rhythm. The vertical white lines at the bottom of the figure and the undulating patterns in the background reinforce the sense of movement and vibration (the wiggle from the text).
Interpretation
In this work from 2006, Paul Megens explores the thin line between control and surrender. The viewer is not only confronted with a penetrating portrait but becomes part of a ritual in which the roles of seducer and seduced constantly switch. The square format of one meter by one meter ensures that, as a viewer, you literally cannot avoid this confrontation.
“A hypnotic interplay between the compelling gaze on the canvas and the incantatory words of the painter-writer.”
