Beautiful vintage sideboard model ‘CU05’, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. This model is part of Pastoe’s U+N or Japanese series, a special line in which Braakman drew inspiration from the tranquility, simplicity, and refined detailing of Japanese design.
This piece comes from the original family and served for many years on a farm near Friesland. Based on the stamp on the back, the cabinet was ordered in December 1958, making it an early and well-documented example within the series.
The sideboard has been fully restored in our workshop with respect for the design and preservation of the characteristic patina. The teak wood has been nourished and refinished with a protective coating, bringing the grain beautifully back to life and giving the whole piece a warm and cozy appearance. The two white flaps have been cleaned and left in their original state, fitting the authentic character.
In addition to its aesthetic qualities, this sideboard was clearly designed from a practical perspective, typical of Braakman. The flaps fold out to create handy work surfaces, featuring compartments for mail and reading material on the right side, while the left side serves as a compact bar. From working straight to a drink—these details have clearly been well thought out. Behind the two large hinged doors lies a spacious and well-organized storage area with two shelves.
Characteristic of the CU05 are the austere, clean lines and the strong contrast between the warm teak and the white surfaces. No superfluous details, but a clear composition in which proportion and simplicity take center stage. The inlaid black plastic handles and the metal base provide a subtle yet distinctive accent. True Dutch Design of the highest caliber, and rightfully something to be proud of.
