Panamarenko, Henri Van Herreweghe's stage name, first made his presence felt in the mid-1960s. He coined the pseudonym Panamarenko - a reference to Pan American Airlines, with a Ukrainian-looking suffix - and had his first solo exhibition in 1966 at Antwerp's Wide White Space Gallery, featuring actions, happenings and a number of poetic objects. Through the gallery, he came into contact with foreign artists, such as Joseph Beuys, who convinced Panamarenko that what he was making was art. Over the following decades, Panamarenko gained fame with planes, cars, submarines and fragile mechanical creatures created from his imagination until he ceased his artistic activities in 2005 and retired. Panamarenko passed away on December 14, 2019.
