A scenic and richly decorated pair of Indian Maharaja throne armchairs, hand-carved and hand-painted in Rajasthan, India, dating approximately from the early 90s. The armchairs were purchased directly in India from suppliers in Rajasthan about thirty years ago and subsequently imported to Italy, where they have remained in the same private collection ever since. The pair represents an elaborate example of decorative Rajasthani furniture, combining richly painted and polychrome surfaces with extensive hand-carved figurative and zoomorphic decoration. Each armchair features extraordinary sculptural armrests formed by large hand-carved and hand-painted peacocks, whose long tails extend backward to connect with the high backrest. The peacocks rest on fully sculpted tigers, creating the characteristic sculptural composition associated with Indian Tiger/Maharaja throne armchairs. The upper part of the backrests is decorated with five hand-painted Indian female figures, while in the center of each backrest there is an oval carved medallion depicting a figure in traditional attire. A crossbar further hand-decorated with floral motifs completes the composition. The upper ends of the backrests terminate with carved elephant heads, while the front legs feature painted botanical decorations and end with zoomorphic feet. The seats and surrounding wooden structures are extensively hand-painted with floral, vegetal, and geometric motifs on a predominantly red background. Being individually handcrafted and hand-painted pieces, the two armchairs show slight variations in carving and decoration, characteristic of traditional artisanal production.
