Pair of carved and gilded wood chairs, Louis XV style, 1900s – France Style: Louis XV Materials: Wood Period: First quarter of the 20th century Country of origin: France The seat needs restoration Overall dimensions: 96 x 43 x 40 cm Seat height: 48 cm Exquisite pair of chairs made during the first quarter of the 20th century in the classic French Louis XV style. Carved and gilded wood with an aged effect. Seat and back upholstered in a muted olive green satin with a satiny finish thanks to the fabric. Tufted backrest. The original style dates from the 18th century and is characterized by curved shapes, in contrast to the more rigid styles that preceded it. This chair features a modern adaptation that maintains the elegant character but with a more sober interpretation, evident in the slightly oval backrest and curved legs. More about the Louis XV Style The Louis XV style is an artistic style, especially present in the decorative arts, that developed during the reign of Louis XV (1715-1774). Initially, the term "Louis XV style" referred to a characteristic type of chair, but it soon spread to all the arts of the time. This style was created by cabinetmakers as a result of greater technical advances in the manufacture of wooden furniture. It is identified with the architectural style known as Rococo. Like Rococo, it features lavish decoration and detail, in contrast to the later, simpler "Louis XVI style."
