Rare pair of antique French ceramic wall lights, dating from the 1950s.
These sconces, finely crafted in glazed ceramic, were most likely handmade by a regional craftsman in central France. Their symbolic design and naive features are fully in keeping with the folk art tradition.
One of the figures clearly represents a queen, crowned and dressed in a royal blue coat adorned with ermine. She holds an open book, a symbol of knowledge, serenity or courtly tradition. The second figure stands erect, holding a large stylized leaf in both hands - a mysterious, poetic gesture, no doubt evoking nature, protection or innocence.
With their whimsical, fairytale-like allure - somewhere between medieval iconography and vintage imagery - these nightlights exude a singular, almost magical presence. They seem timeless and deliciously nostalgic.
Both pieces are in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or visible wear.
Their original electrical system works perfectly, including two E14 sockets with stackable European plugs (without switch). Bulbs supplied.
The first names Martine and Brigitte were hand-painted a long time ago, probably by the original owner for his children. They can be easily erased, restored or replaced with new names - a charming touch of personalization that enriches their history.
