Painting, signed CAVETO
Rarely offered
The artist Johannes Jacobus Maria Dohmen, pseudonym Caveto (meaning, watch your step), was born in Bladel (North Brabant) in 1923. In 1950, he left for the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, and then transferred four years later to the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he was believed to have been the last student of Heinrich Campendonck. More important, however, was his encounter with the German-born artist Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart. The latter had been promoting a painting style based on the principles of Constructivism and De Stijl since the early 1920s. After the Nazis considered his work "entartet," he left Germany, first for Switzerland in 1937, and then settled in Amsterdam in 1938. He remained there until 1954 and was appointed to the Academy. Although Caveto likely only had brief lessons from Vordemberge-Gildewart, having come to Amsterdam to study in 1954, his influence was lasting. This is particularly evident in his monumental commissions, such as wall and ceiling paintings for government buildings and schools (primarily in Maastricht). The "dents" option is selected, but minimal and not visible.
