"Moonset Boulevard".
This is a fairly large painting. Painted by Robert van den Herik with acrylic paint on canvas.
For this painting, Robert van den Herik drew inspiration from the famous work “Rue de Paris, temps de pluie” (1877) by the Impressionist painter Gustave Caillebotte. The elegant walkers with their umbrellas, iconic figures of nineteenth-century Paris, are detached by Van den Herik from their original surroundings and relocated to an entirely different reality.
In "Moonset Boulevard," these recognizable characters encounter a landscape typical of the artist's oeuvre: a deserted, otherworldly landscape where realism and imagination merge. Along a dark road, reddish-brown, kasbah-like architecture rises on a pale and desolate terrain. In the background, mountains stand out against a deep-black sky in which a mysterious celestial body hangs.
As is often the case in his work, Van den Herik combines everyday elements with unexpected objects and locations. Central to the composition is a monumental lamp, designed and crafted by the artist himself. The characteristic column with a checkerboard pattern and the metal bowl above it reinforce the alienating atmosphere of the scene.
By connecting a well-known image from art history with his own surrealist universe, Van den Herik creates an intriguing encounter between past and future, between recognition and alienation. “Moonset Boulevard” invites the viewer to relive a familiar scene, but in a world where the ordinary rules of time, place, and reality no longer apply.
