18th-century painting on heavy oak panel. Wassenbergh was an apprentice of painter Jannes van Diren. He was enrolled in the guild of painters and glaziers in the city of Groningen in 1706. From 1712 to 1714, he lived and worked as an apprentice of Adriaen van der Werff in Rotterdam. Wassenbergh received commissions for portraits of the Groningen elite, including members of the Hora Siccama, Gockinga and Trip families. In addition to being a portrait painter, he was primarily an interior painter and made chimney and ceiling pieces, mostly history pieces. His children Johannes (Jan) (1716-1763) and Elisabeth Geertruida (1729-1781) also became artists. Wassenbergh was also an art dealer and a member of the guild of peddlers in Groningen. One of his pupils was Pieter Lofvers. See photos for details and dimensions. Cannot find signature but painting is quite dark; reverse side shows it.
