“Ovalen” teak coffee table designed by Carl Malmsten, complete with its original maker’s label. The thin, well-balanced oval top rests on four slender legs that connect seamlessly beneath the apron, creating a harmonious and continuous composition. The design has an almost organic character: the curved outline of the top echoes the softly shaped stretchers, while the slightly arched legs introduce lightness and subtle movement. Carl Malmsten was a central figure in twentieth-century Swedish design, known for his independent stance toward strict functionalism. Advocating a cultivated tradition grounded in Nordic craftsmanship, he promoted a humane and timeless approach to design based on proportion, material quality and skilled workmanship. “Ovalen” fully embodies this philosophy, combining understated elegance with natural warmth.
