Otto Piene (Bad Laasphe, April 18, 1928 – Berlin, July 17, 2014) was a German artist who founded the German group 'Zero' in Düsseldorf in 1957 together with Heinz Mack.
Biography
Piene initially studied philosophy in Munich and in Düsseldorf, where he would later also teach at the Art Academy. He created, among other things, Raster-bilde using a kind of stencil technique, and smoke and fire images in which he allowed smoke and soot to settle on sheets of paper or burn into the canvas. After 1960, he also worked with laser light, hot air balloons, and aerial ballets.
In 1962, together with Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker, he set up a 'light salon' at the 'Nul' exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
