The Vitra Eames Lounge Chair is a design by American design icons Charles and Ray Eames, who made a groundbreaking contribution to furniture and industrial design during the last century. In particular, the technique they developed to form plywood and fiberglass into seat shells was revolutionary at the time and resulted in designs that are still produced and loved today. One of the absolute icons from the repertoire of Charles (1907 – 1978) and Ray (1912 – 1988) is the Lounge Chair with ottoman. The famous Lounge Chair with ottoman was designed in 1956 as a gift for a married couple who were friends of the Eameses. The chair was intended to radiate a sense of warmth, 'like a baseball player's perfectly fitting glove', and offer the body ultimate comfort. Such a design also ushered in a new era for the British club armchair. Not only was the Lounge Chair lighter, more elegant, and more modern than the somewhat bulky traditional models, but it was also more comfortable.
The Eames Lounge Chair + Ottoman is considered a milestone in modern design. The combination of chair and footstool was developed with attention to comfort, durability, and high-quality finish.
Vitra still produces this classic according to the original design principles, using refined materials and artisanal production methods.
The wooden shells are manufactured from molded plywood with a veneer layer of carefully selected wood species, including European walnut, cherry, chestnut, and Santos rosewood from FSC-certified forests. The natural grain of the wood remains visible thanks to the use of water-based lacquers that contribute to a durable finish. The cushions are filled with recyclable V-Foam and feature removable covers.
The cast aluminium base ensures stability and a refined visual balance between chair and footstool. The Lounge Chair has a swivel base, while the Ottoman features a fixed four-star base. Both components come standard with felt glides in the colour Basic Dark. These glides protect hard floors and contribute to solid positioning. Each Eames Lounge Chair + Ottoman is hand-assembled at Vitra and subjected to rigorous quality controls. The materials are selected with an eye for sustainability and origin: the wood comes from responsibly managed forests, the aluminium consists largely of recycled material, and the leather is tanned in an environmentally friendly manner. The Lounge Chair + Ottoman remains a paragon of thoughtful design and long-lasting comfort. Every detail, from the suspension to the stitching of the upholstery, is designed for lasting quality.
