Zanotta Servopluvio — Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, 1961 Design, Early Vintage Production, Italy
Original Vintage Servopluvio umbrella stand, designed in 1961 by Achille Castiglioni (1918–2002) and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913–1968), two of the leading figures of 20th-century Italian design. Servopluvio was originally conceived specifically for the celebrated Splügen Bräu restaurant in Milan, an extraordinary Castiglioni interior for which the brothers designed both the space and individual furnishings. Zanotta introduced Servopluvio into production in 1980.
This example is particularly interesting for its early construction, corresponding to the original technical concept documented by the Fondazione Achille Castiglioni: a metal water-catching basin containing a heavy cast-metal ballast, combined with a metal upright and the characteristic curved umbrella supports. The substantial base retains its original raised Zanotta / Made in Italy manufacturer’s mark. Current Zanotta production uses a different construction, with a polypropylene base and aluminium basin.
Servopluvio was one of the first designs in the Castiglioni brothers’ celebrated Servi family, a modular series of rigorously functional objects developed over more than two decades. Works from the Servi family entered the permanent collections of seven international design museums.
With its early construction, original Zanotta marking and remarkable history connecting it directly to one of the Castiglioni brothers’ most important Milanese interiors, this is a particularly appealing vintage example of an established Italian design classic.
