The picture depicts the men's 100-meter final at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, widely regarded as "the dirtiest race in history."
Why It Is Controversial:
• The Disqualification: Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson (bib #159) won the race with a blistering, world-record time of 9.79 seconds. Three days later, he tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol. He was stripped of his gold medal, and his world record was erased.
• Widespread Doping: The controversy extends far beyond Johnson. Of the eight athletes who ran in that final, six were eventually implicated in performance-enhancing drug scandals or failed drug tests over the course of their careers.
• The Aftermath: The gold medal was subsequently awarded to American runner Carl Lewis (wearing blue) who himself had tested positive for stimulants during the U.S. Olympic Trials earlier that year, though the results were cleared by the USOC.
