Pau Marcell (full name: Pau Marcell i Giné Folch) was a Spanish sculptor born in a small village, where he worked as a farmer and barber. At the age of 29, he decided to study at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was taught by Llucià Oslé, whom he also assisted in his workshop. He lived and worked in Barcelona for twenty years before returning to his hometown. In Barcelona, to further his training, he studied anatomy at the Hospital Clínic for eight years and enrolled in the Industrial School to learn ceramics, especially the technique of firing colors.
Marçàginé began participating in competitions held in Tarragona. He participated in the 5th Julio Antonio Medal competition in 1948. In 1951, he won first prize for his work "Stone Head," and in 1956, he participated in the 3rd Provincial Art Exhibition Competition, where he won an honorable mention for sculpture. That same year, he presented a group of works at the 3rd Hispano-American Biennial. Works such as the Monegros group and "Child's Head" show that the sculptor was searching for his own path. The influences of both Egyptian sculpture and primitive art are evident.
He has held numerous exhibitions in various cities in Catalonia and has public works in Marçà and Ribera d'Ebre, in addition to having his own museum in his hometown, established by the City Council.
His preferred material is clay; he finds it to be the material that connects him to the earth and with which he feels completely identified. His sculptural work is characterized by its defined volumes, as if carved from wood rather than modeled, revealing a certain influence of Picasso and primitive art. His works maintain a close conceptual relationship with his dry, harsh land. His pieces are strong, robust, and sincere, like his own personal territory. It's worth noting that his pseudonym is a fusion of his surname and the name of his village.
