Kerman Carpets ---- The city of Kerman is located in southeastern Iran, 1000 km south of Tehran in the Dasht-e-Lut desert. It is considered one of Iran's most important carpet-producing regions. Unlike other parts of Persia, Kerman's remote and isolated geographical location allowed it to flourish with relatively little outside influence or invasion. This enabled Kerman weavers to perfect their carpet-making skills and develop their artistic creativity undisturbed. The region's color and dyeing capabilities were unparalleled, and Kerman's dyers became famous for producing delicate and subtle, light hues not found elsewhere. Kerman carpets are characterized by their typical red base color, a rich, traditionally red or blue background beautifully adorned with lighter and more intricate floral, vase-like, and curvilinear patterns. Carpets with central medallions and a wider border filled with flowers and large palmettes are also characteristic of the Kerman region. In the 1920s, demand grew in America, and to meet this market, lower-quality carpets with simpler designs and fewer color combinations were produced. This trend has slowly reversed, and over the last 40 years, higher-quality carpets with greater knot density, a wider range of colors, and traditional Safavid patterns have returned to the market.
