Product description
The Knoll Studio Tulip Chair is a classic design by Eero Saarinen. The jumble of table legs and chairs found in most interiors was a thorn in Saarinen's side. With the 1957 Tulip Chair, he attempted to recreate a chair as a single, flowing whole. His idea of molding the entire chair from fiberglass proved unfeasible, and it was ultimately made in two parts: a molded fiberglass seat reinforced with a layer of plastic and a cast aluminum base with a Rilsan coating. Despite this, the chair appears to be a single piece, its undulating shape reminiscent of a tulip leaf. An added advantage of the two separate parts is their flexibility, making the chair fully rotatable. Along with the armchairs and tables, also known as the "Pedestal Collection," the chair exemplifies 1950s modernism. On the underside of the base, you'll find the Knoll logo and Eero Saarinen's signature as proof of authenticity. The Tulip chair is 49 centimeters wide, 81 centimeters high, and 53 centimeters deep. The seat height is 47 centimeters. The chair is available in white or black and offers various upholstery options for the seat cushion. We've listed a few below. Don't see your favorite? Please contact us. The Tulip Chair was first released in 1957 by the American Knoll Studio, which still carries the chair today. Born to architect Eliel Saarinen and textile designer Loja Saarinen, Eero was born into a creative family of designers. He worked at the Cranbrook Campus, where he met Charles Eames. A friendship developed that led to many experiments with materials. Cranbrook is also where he met Florence Knoll, who asked him to design for the company in the 1940s. In addition to the iconic Pedestal series, the Womb Chair was also created there.
