This original chromolithograph was created by the British botanical artist Henry George Moon. The work depicts the Coelogyne cristata maxima, also known as the 'Snow Queen', and is taken from the standard botanical work 'Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described'.
The print was produced in 1888 by Joseph Mansell for Frederick Sander. It is an original first edition, characterized by the artisanal stipple structure of the hand-drawn lithographic stone and the tactile ink on the heavy paper. The leaves display the characteristic sheen of gum arabic, which adds depth to the colors. The name of the orchid is printed on a separate strip and mounted onto the plate by hand. The dimensions of the paper are approximately 34.5 by 43 centimeters. The work is delivered framed.
The work is in good, authentic condition befitting its age of over 135 years. The margins have been historically trimmed for framing, while the original print line on the sides has been preserved. This historic artwork makes a sophisticated addition to a classic or eclectic interior. The botanical motif comes into its own in a study, library, or as part of a gallery wall.
