Artist KARL LAGASSE
Karl Lagasse, born on April 4, 1981, in Paris, is a French artist. He created the sculpture One Dollar and the trophy of the 43rd edition of the Deauville American Film Festival.
Artistic Career
Karl Lagasse's career began in 1996 with the sale of his first work in Antwerp, at the age of 15.
A few years later, in 2003, he prepared his first exhibition in Paris, where he exhibited works that combine collage and painting, as suggested by Yvaral Vasarely[4], the son of the Hungarian sculptor Victor Vasarely, during their meeting in 1998.
He began sculpting in 2004, finding inspiration in The White Night [Which One?]. He then began exploring his style and launched the "Buildings" series, "totem" works composed of various materials. That same year, he left Paris to settle in Normandy.
In 2006, Isy Brachot (a renowned Brussels gallery) dedicated an exhibition to him. One painting remained unsold. Karl Lagasse then offered it to an enthusiast who was unable to purchase it.
In 2008, he returned to Paris to exhibit at the Espace Pierre Cardin. Paintings, sculptures, and photographs were presented. A film about the creation of the works was also shown.
In 2009, one of the artist's most emblematic works, the One Dollar, was created.[7] This work stemmed from his admiration for the United States, but also symbolized what is possible with just one dollar; "Making art with $1."
In 2010, he was chosen to represent the municipality of Deauville (Normandy) at the "Horsemania" World Equestrian Championships, held in Lexington (United States), a town connected to the Normandy seaside resort, for which he created a sculpture.
After the international success of "One Dollar," he presented another work that would also become iconic: "Cryptogram One." It was unveiled to the public at the Art Monaco fair in 2011.
To celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in 2012, he created a 2.80 m by 60 cm wide "Building" out of cement, wood, glass, and photographs in collaboration with Corbis and exhibited it at the Carlton Cinema Club. Artists attending the festival were invited to sign the work and leave a message on it. This includes José Garcia, Michel Hazanvisius, Bérénice Bejo, Gad Elmaleh, but also Cuba Gooding Jr., Tim Roth, Matthew McConaughey and Zac Efron.
