Description
The design duo Charles and Ray Eames were pivotal figures in the development of post-war American design. Their guiding principle was to create designs that were both high-quality and aesthetically sophisticated. The use of innovative materials—such as die-cast aluminum and fiberglass—combined with ergonomic principles was revolutionary at the time. Their extensive body of work has influenced generations of architects and designers.
Charles Eames was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1970 and to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1977.
The couple designed the Fiberglass Chair as early as 1948. However, the model did not go into production until the early 1950s, as the manufacturing process proved technically too challenging. The breakthrough was finally achieved through the use of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Today, the Fiberglass Chair is considered one of the most significant design icons of the 20th century.
