Offered for sale: an impressive and historically significant ecclesiastical carving from the first quarter of the 18th century (circa 1725).
This massive, heavy oak sculpture depicts an expressive bust of Christ (or an apostle) and has been assessed by art expert Vincent Bovens.
Due to the scale and the high quality of the carving, this is unequivocally an ecclesiastical piece and not a simple piece of domestic devotion. The sculpture was originally designed as a full-fledged bust and still displays the authentic holes at the bottom for the pins with which it was firmly anchored to an ecclesiastical pedestal at the time (among other things to prevent theft).
Style and Provenance:
The refined, dynamic Baroque style suggests an origin from France, Southern Germany, or Flanders (Bruges region). The wood has a magnificent, deep patina and bears subtle traces indicating that the sculpture was most likely polychromed (painted) in the past. Specifications:
