Monumental Søholm Studio Vase by Einar Johansen – Denmark, ca. 1960s
Model 3461 | Height 42 cm | Exceptional Glaze and Relief Detail
A spectacular example of Danish mid-century studio ceramics, this large-format vase was designed by Einar Johansen for Søholm Keramik, Bornholm, and executed in their Studio line—marked clearly on the base with incised script.
Crafted circa 1960s, the vase displays Johansen’s characteristic sculptural precision, with a square-bodied architectural form and four deeply recessed roundels in rhythmic, concentric relief. The vibrant glaze—a deep, mottled cobalt blue—shifts with light and angle, accented by rich oxblood browns at the collar and inner rings. The dynamic interplay between glossy surface and graphic relief evokes both Brutalist and Op Art tendencies, while maintaining the elegance of Nordic design restraint.
Søholm’s Studio series, less prolific than its serial production, embodies the factory’s most daring artistic output. Johansen, a trained sculptor, pushed ceramic form beyond function into expression. This vase—model 3461—is among his largest and most sought-after works, a commanding centrepiece with undeniable modernist appeal.
