Rare Collector's Item: Chinese Artisan Chess Table (Vintage, circa 1960s–1980s)
Overview & History
This exceptional side and chess table is a fascinating example of East Asian craftsmanship from the Mid-Century era (circa 1960s to 1980s). Manufactured in renowned workshops in southern China (e.g., Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Guangdong – bearing the manufacturer's mark "L.S. REGISTERED TRADE MARK"), this piece combines Western chess culture with the aesthetics of classical Chinese scholarly art.
While most commercially available examples are foldable boxes and cases containing these porcelain tiles, this freestanding, solid wood table is a rare, premium version produced in limited quantities.
Special Construction & Craftsmanship
All-wood construction: A key quality feature is the absence of metal screws or nails. The four table legs can be seamlessly screwed into and out of the table frame using precisely cut threads directly into the wood.
Integrated drawer: A smooth-running drawer is located beneath the playing surface for the protected storage of the entire set of pieces.
Compact dimensions: With a base of 55 x 55 cm and a height of 50 cm, the table has ideal side table proportions.
Playing surface & imagery
Inlay tiles: The playing surface consists of alternating dark wood squares and hand-decorated porcelain/ceramic tiles.
Symbolism: The tiles depict traditional Chinese ink paintings (scholars, mountain landscapes, nature scenes) representing the Four Arts of Chinese scholarship (music, chess/Go, calligraphy, painting).
Weiqi/Go design: The fine grid on the light-colored tiles visually suggests the traditional Chinese game of Go (Weiqi) and simultaneously forms the grid system for classical chess.
Chess Pieces
32-piece chess set: Complete, intricately hand-carved wooden pieces.
Imperial Motif: The pieces depict the Chinese imperial court – emperor and empress as king and queen, pagoda watchtowers as rooks, and Chinese warriors and sages as pawns, knights, and bishops.
Condition & Honest Note
Pieces & Tiles: All hand-carved chess pieces and the porcelain tiles in the center of the playing surface are in excellent condition.
Wooden Frame (Vintage Patina): The wood of the table shows signs of age, including scratches and imperfections. If you are looking for a pristine or flawless piece of furniture, this is not the right set – the table tells its own story and lives from its authentic age.
Target Audience: Ideally suited for vintage furniture enthusiasts, antique collectors, or anyone who appreciates the unique charm of old craftsmanship with genuine patina.
