A large hand-thrown and hand-painted ceramic vase by Michal Parikrupa-Šipár (1909–1995), one of the most important masters of the traditional pottery of Pozdišovce in eastern Slovakia. The vase is personally signed “Michal Parikrupa, Pozdišovce” and dated 1970 on the underside. Its decoration is dominated by the celebrated Pozdišovská karička motif: a rhythmic procession of traditionally dressed female figures holding hands, set against a deep black ground and surrounded by bands of green, ochre and cream-colored wave ornament. Karička refers to the traditional eastern Slovak circle dance. The motif developed from ideas introduced by ceramic artist Júlia Horová-Kováčiková after her influential work with the Pozdišovce potters from 1947; Parikrupa-Šipár was the first master to transfer the motif onto pottery and subsequently developed numerous variations of it. Parikrupa-Šipár came from an old pottery family and began working at the wheel at the age of twelve. He became one of the leading figures of the Pozdišovce tradition, combining inherited craft techniques with new forms and richly figurative decoration. In 1959 he was officially awarded the title Master of Folk Artistic Production, and his work was shown internationally, including presentations in Brussels and Montreal. This 1970 vase is an especially characteristic example of his mature work. The monumental ovoid form provides an ideal field for the continuous dance scene, while the alternating geometric bands create a strong architectural rhythm. The contrast between the glossy black ground, restrained natural tones and vivid blue and green figures gives the piece an unusually sophisticated graphic presence. More than a decorative folk object, the vase represents an important chapter of Czechoslovak post-war applied art, in which centuries-old regional craftsmanship was deliberately preserved while being transformed into a modern visual language. Pozdišovce pottery itself has a documented history reaching back to the early 15th century, and Parikrupa-Šipár became one of its defining 20th-century representatives.
