Mega Vintage Yamagata Kokeshi By Kobayashi (46 Cm). The Kobayashi family is an influential and historically significant family of woodworkers (kiji-shi) and kokeshi makers that forms the basis of the Yamagata-kei (Yamagata-style) kokeshi. The tradition of the Yamagata-style kokeshi originates at the Sakunami hot springs (in Miyagi Prefecture), where the Kobayashi family was active. Later, the family moved to the city of Yamagata in the prefecture of the same name, where patriarch and artisans such as Kuraji Kobayashi (who apprenticed with woodworkers in Sakunami in the 19th century) established the kokeshi craft. The artisan Souji Kobayashi is also recognized for creating the distinctive Yamagata styles within the city. Dolls from this family line and the Yamagata-Sakunami tradition are characterized by slender or graceful bodies that could easily be held by children, often featuring characteristic paintings of plants and flowers such as plum blossom (ume), chrysanthemums (kiku), and safflower (benibana, which is unique to this region). The heads are typically somewhat larger and wear a distinctive hairstyle with a semi-circular fringe and delicate facial features. The craft was passed down through generations within the family. Well-known later makers within the family and lineage include artisans such as Seijiro Kobayashi and Seitaro Kobayashi, as well as makers like Seiki Kobayashi (Kiyoo Kobayashi) who continued the family trade and signed the wood. The signature on the doll appears to refer to Seiki Kobayashi / Kiyoo Kobayashi. The height is 46 cm; please view the photos for the condition. NB: The kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
