Product description
Designed by Gio Ponti, these luggage racks exemplify the architect’s ability to transform functional objects into refined architectural forms. Executed in oak with integrated brass elements, the design features slatted surfaces supported by tapered legs and softly sculpted joints. Conceived to function as suitcase holders, the pieces reflect Ponti’s sensitivity to proportion and use, while their balanced scale and clarity of form also allow them to serve naturally as side tables in contemporary interiors. Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Italian design, working fluidly across architecture, furniture, publishing, and the decorative arts; these pieces stand as rare examples of mid-century Italian design and as thoughtful expressions of his belief that even the most utilitarian objects should possess intelligence, grace, and architectural presence. The broader architectural vision from which these pieces emerged was shaped by the challenge of reconciling the functional demands of modern life with the poetic resonance of tradition. This ambition led Roberto Fernandes to entrust the project to Gio Ponti, whose independent and imaginative approach allowed him to weave local influences, such as the majolica tradition of Salerno, with wider artistic references, including the ceramic work of Fausto Melotti. Inaugurated on 11 April 1962, the project has since been regarded as a paradigmatic work of contemporary architecture, reflecting a shared intuition between architect and patron, one that Ponti himself acknowledged in the pages of Domus. Priced individually.
