This coffee table was designed by Louis van Teeffelen (1921–1972) for the Dutch furniture manufacturer Wébé, where he was chief designer from 1955 and remained the company's leading designer until his departure in 1967. Van Teeffelen introduced a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic to Dutch furniture design, combining organic, sculptural forms with functional details — a combination that makes his work for Wébé one of the most recognizable examples of Dutch mid-century design.
This specific model, known as Model 44, is crafted from solid teak with a teak veneer top and features a reversible tabletop — a recurring functional detail in van Teeffelen's work for Wébé. The waisted, sculptural legs and the underlying plateau are characteristic of his designs, in which craftsmanship and everyday usability always go hand in hand. The reversible top allows the table to be rotated for a fresh, pristine side or simply a different wood grain presentation — a practical solution typical of Dutch mid-century design thinking, where function was never separate from form. The teak displays a warm, even color with beautifully defined grain, and the rounded leg tops are a recognizable Van Teeffelen detail.
