Beautiful set of vintage ‘Lotus’ armchairs, designed by Rob Parry and produced by Gelderland in the 1960s. The Lotus is considered one of Parry’s more refined designs, in which comfort and sleek Dutch modernism come together in an elegant manner.
These armchairs come from Arnhem and were purchased as a set in the 1960s. The previous owner acquired them from the original owners and used them for years as lounge chairs in his coffee shop. Drinking coffee in style, then; actually, more places should do that.
After years of intensive use, the armchairs have been fully restored. The restoration was explicitly not aimed at ‘making the chairs new’, but at preserving their characteristic patina and original appearance. The metal base has been thoroughly cleaned, and the walnut frame has been nourished and given a new satin-matte finish. As a result, the armchairs have fully regained their warm, luxurious appearance and elegant character.
The seat consists of three separate elements, each fitted with new foam and reupholstered in high-quality black leather. This enhances the luxurious character of the armchairs. The combination of warm walnut wood, sleek steel, and deep black leather gives the armchairs an almost architectural appearance.
As you would expect from Rob Parry, these armchairs are exceptionally comfortable. They are chairs you sit in in the morning and don't actually want to get up from in the evening, exactly in line with Parry’s design philosophy: the person first, then the design. Pure, understated Dutch design with craftsmanship and quality that guarantee years of seating pleasure.
