Beautiful vintage sofa bed model ‘Lotus 45’, designed by Rob Parry and produced by Gelderland in the 1960s. The Lotus 45 was Parry's first daybed design for Gelderland. This particular piece comes from the original family in Wijk aan Zee and was originally part of a set with a matching model ‘2280’ armchair. After decades of use and a less successful restoration in the past, the sofa bed has been carefully restored in the workshop, with respect for the original design. The steel frame has been completely stripped and repainted in the original colour, bringing the clean lines prominently back into focus. The seat and backrest have been completely rebuilt, fitted with new, sturdy foam, and subsequently upholstered in two high-quality wool furniture fabrics. The deep navy blue seat and the slightly lighter backrest create a subtle colour contrast that gives the sleek design more depth and a refined, playful accent. An important feature is the clever pull-out mechanism. In sofa mode, the seat reclines slightly, creating a relaxed sitting position. With one simple movement, the seat slides forward to form a generous, completely flat sleeping surface. A clever construction that allows the sofa to effortlessly transform into a comfortable sleeping place, without compromising the design. Characteristic of this sofa bed is its minimalist construction. The generous seat and backrest are supported by a slender steel frame with clean, understated lines. Despite this simplicity, the sofa is exceptionally comfortable, exactly as Rob Parry intended his designs to be: functional, comfortable, and without unnecessary details. A beautiful piece of Dutch design that will effortlessly last for many years to come.
