Mohair has a number of unique characteristics, including a beautiful subtle sheen. The characteristic lustre of mohair can partly be explained by the structure of the fiber: the scales around the fiber are much less developed than in wool and barely stand clear of the shaft (visible under a microscope). The finer the scales, the greater the lustre. For this reason, mohair has more luster than wool. Mohair has a significantly greater elastic recovery capacity than wool. In addition, the fibers have less tendency to shrink and felt. Mohair is the most durable animal fiber; mohair fibers are strong and extremely hard-wearing. Mohair fibers are light and soft while also being warm and breathable.
